The full story
The bird-topped clock towers make the Royal Liver Building a Pier Head landmark. Its guided tower tour offers Mersey and city views after a substantial stair climb.
From the waterfront, read the copper Liver Birds and clocks as part of the city’s maritime skyline. If the guided tower visit is available, the elevated Mersey and city panorama gives a different sense of Pier Head’s position between the port, river and centre.
Royal Liver Building opened in 1911 as the headquarters of Royal Liver Assurance, a society founded in Liverpool to help families after the loss of a wage earner. It stands at Pier Head with the Cunard and Port of Liverpool buildings, the group known as the Three Graces. The two clock towers carry the Liver Birds, emblems closely associated with the city, and made the building recognisable to people approaching along the Mersey. The structure used reinforced concrete at a scale that was bold for its time. That history helps make sense of both its practical office origins and its public role as a skyline marker. From the ground, compare its vertical towers with its lower neighbours; from the guided tower visit, the river and dock pattern reveal why this site became such a prominent address.
- Find the copper Liver Birds above the clock towers.
- Compare the clocks with the other two Three Graces.
- See the Mersey and city panorama on the guided tower tour.
Check tour availability and book a specific departure before relying on tower access.
Expect the upper part of the tour to involve 124 stairs.
View the building from Pier Head even if you skip the tower.
