A first visit, one image at a time

We will start under the Pyramid and go from the Greek galleries to the Denon wing. There are bodies turning in marble, paintings large enough to fill a wall and a portrait much smaller than its fame might suggest. We will look at the building too, because these works are seen inside rooms with earlier uses. If you have not entered yet, use an open museum entrance and pass security. In the Hall Napoléon, pause clear of queues and find the signs for Sully. Our first stop is in this reception hall. Keep your ticket ready before heading towards the collections.

Before you arrive

Includes stairs and changes of level. Ask the visitor-assistance desk for adapted access if you need it. Visit time includes looking, walking and pauses. Entrance waits are additional. If a room or work is unavailable, ask staff for the open approach before skipping it.

Beneath the Pyramid

Beneath the Pyramid ↗

Hall Napoléon, level -2. Pause clear of entrance queues.

Pause in the reception hall beneath the Pyramid, clear of queues and people passing.

Pause in the reception hall beneath the Pyramid, clear of queues and people passing. Daylight comes through the glass above. Find the names Denon, Sully and Richelieu on the signs. Each leads to a different wing, and those three names will help you connect what you see inside with the palace around the courtyard.

I. M. Pei, the architect born in China who worked in the United States, placed this central reception space underground. It connects the wings and receives people arriving for different parts of the museum. The palace above grew as a royal residence over centuries. This hall was designed for the museum’s visitors.

Before leaving the hall, find the wing indicated in your next direction. Keep your ticket ready for the collections entrance. If a passage is closed, ask staff for the open approach to the next room. You can take the visit one part at a time without having to understand the whole building at once.

Take the Sully entrance and follow the signs up to Greek antiquities on level 0, room 348, the Salle des Caryatides. Confirm the current route with the information desk before leaving the hall.
