Porto Moniz
This northwestern town sits between mountain slopes and the Atlantic, with lava pools at its edge. Allow time beyond the pools to see the aquarium, church and town streets.
Use the town as a base for more than one stop: the natural pools, aquarium and parish church offer different reasons to linger. Walking between them also reveals how closely the built settlement meets volcanic rock and open sea. That combination can fill a longer stop than the pools alone.
