Valletta Art and Harbour Walk

Pair Valletta’s cathedral and archaeology collections with limestone streets, the Grandmaster Palace and two harbour gardens, keeping museum time flexible within one compact city walk.

Valletta Art and Harbour Walk

Why go

Begin at the National Museum of Archaeology to connect Malta’s temple figures with the monuments elsewhere on the islands. Continue to St John’s Co-Cathedral for the contrast between its restrained exterior and decorated interior, then cross the street grid toward the Grandmaster Palace. Casa Rocca Piccola is an optional additional interior rather than a stop to rush through. Walk down to Lower Barrakka Gardens before finishing at Upper Barrakka Gardens above the Grand Harbour. Confirm museum and church access first, and choose fewer interiors if you want a slower day outdoors.

    National Museum of Archaeology

Original prehistoric objects give context to Malta's temple sites inside a former Knights' auberge. This museum is especially useful before visiting ruins where protected originals are absent.

    02

    Optional · 45–90 min

    St John's Co-Cathedral

Valletta's former conventual church rewards an indoor visit with carved limestone, marble tombs and Caravaggio paintings. Its plain façade gives little warning of the ornate interior.

    Optional · 45–75 min

    Grandmaster Palace

The palace on St George's Square joins the Order's political history with an armour collection. Plan an interior visit around the rooms currently available for entry.

    Optional · 45–60 min

    Casa Rocca Piccola

A furnished sixteenth-century family palace shows domestic Valletta behind its street façades. Interconnecting rooms, private collections and wartime shelter history distinguish it from the city's state monuments.

    Optional · 15–25 min

    Lower Barrakka Gardens

This small garden offers a harbour entrance and breakwater view from Valletta's eastern walls. A neoclassical memorial gives the terrace a distinct focus beyond the sea.

    Main stop · 15–30 min

    Upper Barrakka Gardens

A terrace above Valletta's walls gives a clear overview of Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. The compact garden works well between visits inside the capital.
