Fort St Elmo
A star fort at Valletta's tip explains the defence of both main harbours. The visit combines military architecture and museum interpretation with exposed stretches beside the sea.
Why go
The position makes the fort's purpose immediately visible: Marsamxett lies on one side and Grand Harbour on the other. St Elmo held out for nearly a month during the Great Siege of 1565 before falling. Its layered defences help explain how this small peninsula became the site of a fortified capital.
