Escolta Street

Escolta is an old commercial street on the edge of Binondo, best explored on foot for its surviving business facades. It offers an architectural counterpoint to Chinatown's food and market streets.

Escolta Street

Why go

The street once concentrated major shops, banks and early tall buildings as Manila's business center. Its Art Deco and other historic facades let you read that change from street level. Walking Escolta after Binondo Church and the plaza shows how trading neighborhoods and later commercial ambitions grew beside one another near the Pasig River.

What to look for

  • Compare the facades of the First United, Regina and Burke buildings along the street.
  • Look for early twentieth-century commercial details above the ground-floor businesses.

Useful to know

  • Treat the Burke Street junction as a rough orientation point, not a designated entrance.
  • Check individual buildings or shops before expecting to go inside.
  • Walk it with nearby Binondo stops rather than planning a separate cross-city trip.
