Koutoubia Mosque
The Koutoubia’s minaret rises above the southwest side of the medina and gives Marrakech a clear visual anchor. Come for the exterior and gardens; the mosque itself is a place of worship.
Why go
Its tall Almohad minaret can be read from several streets around Jemaa el-Fna, so it helps you orient yourself while walking. The restrained mass below and patterned upper sections make a useful architectural contrast with the close-packed souks. Pause in the surrounding gardens for a longer view, then trace the tower’s silhouette as you move back toward the square.
What to look for
The minaret stands above the low roofs of the medina.
Patterned upper tiers break up the tower’s plain lower mass.
Useful to know
View the exterior from the gardens and nearby streets; respect worship access.
