Outdoor walks and façade observations. Interior admission is not included.

The full story

Jemaa el-Fna is Marrakech’s great public square, where food stalls and performers give the medina a changing rhythm. Walk through by day, then return after dark to see its busiest face.

The square is more than a landmark to photograph: it is a living stage for storytelling, music, food and everyday trade. Its position at the edge of the souks makes it a natural start or finish for a medina walk. A second visit in the evening reveals a different pattern of activity and helps explain why UNESCO recognizes its cultural traditions.

  • Performers and food sellers share the open square.
  • Souk lanes branch off the square’s northern side.

Return at a different time of day to compare the square’s atmosphere.

Agdal Gardens extend south of the old city as historic orchards and water landscapes. Their broad scale suits visitors interested in Marrakech’s garden history, though they are less compact than Menara.

Almoravid KoubbaPlaces

Architecture / History

Almoravid Koubba

The Almoravid Koubba is a small surviving monument near Ben Youssef Madrasa. Its value lies in seeing an early layer of Marrakech beside much later buildings in the same tight northern-medina cluster.

Bab ad-DebbaghPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab ad-Debbagh

Bab ad-Debbagh is a focused Marrakech stop. This eastern gate retains elements of the old medina wall. Its position makes the lesser-known eastern edge of the city legible. See the exterior on a dedicated eastern-medina walk.

Bab AgnaouPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab Agnaou

Bab Agnaou is a monumental gate into the Kasbah quarter, close to the Saadian Tombs. Its carved stone face rewards a short stop while crossing between the southern medina and palace district.

Bab DoukkalaPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab Doukkala

Bab Doukkala is a Marrakech stop. A western gate marks a route in and out of the medina. The neighboring streets show a less ceremonial wall crossing than Bab Agnaou.

Bab el-KhemisPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab el-Khemis

Bab el-Khemis is a focused Marrakech stop. A gate punctuates the northern side of the medina walls. It helps show the old city’s perimeter away from the busiest central approaches. Combine the exterior stop with a selected northern wall walk.

Explore
Bab er-RobbPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab er-Robb

Bab er-Robb is a focused Marrakech stop. A southern gate links approaches to the historic Kasbah walls. Its massing adds a contrast to the more elaborate Bab Agnaou. Compare the two gates on one Kasbah walk.

Explore
Bab KsibaPlaces

Architecture / History

Bab Ksiba

Bab Ksiba is a modest southern gate tied to the Kasbah walls. It is most useful as a brief exterior stop while exploring Marrakech’s fortifications rather than as a destination on its own.

Explore
Bahia PalacePlaces

Architecture / History

Bahia Palace

Bahia Palace is a sequence of courtyards, gardens and decorated rooms in the southern medina. It rewards visitors who want close detail rather than the monumental emptiness of El Badi.

Explore
Ben Salah MosquePlaces

Architecture / History

Ben Salah Mosque

Ben Salah Mosque is a focused Marrakech stop. A historic minaret rises from the eastern part of the medina. The building gives a useful counterpoint to the larger Koutoubia monument. Look from public lanes while crossing the eastern medina.
