Why go
The 1888 building shows how an imposing downtown lodge found a second life as space for artists and performances. Long and Kees designed it in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, a contrast to the neighboring theater facade. Artspace now offers studios and the Tek Box Theater here, making this a distinct venue from the currently closed Cowles Center next door.
What to look for
- The former Masonic Temple is a substantial Richardsonian Romanesque building on Hennepin Avenue.
- The arts center stands beside the former Shubert theater building, giving the block two eras of architecture.
Useful to know
- Look at the exterior during a Hennepin Avenue walk; use a listed event or class for an interior visit.
- Check the Hennepin Center's own schedule rather than the neighboring Cowles Center's reopening news.
