Why go
This close-set Old Bagan route works well for visitors who want to understand the former city before looking farther across the plain. Begin in the museum for a smaller-scale view of the archaeological landscape. Gawdawpalin and Thatbyinnyu then return you to the monuments themselves, while Tharaba Gate marks the old city’s edge. The reconstructed Golden Palace offers a different, royal-style setting near the gate. Finish at Ananda, where the Buddha images and continuing worship call for a slower visit. The stops are near one another, though the museum and Ananda merit more time than the brief gate stop. Confirm access locally before entering enclosed sites.
