Castel Nuovo
A medieval royal fortress beside Piazza Municipio, with a striking Renaissance arch set between heavy towers. Enter for the civic museum and layered royal history.
Castel Nuovo shows Naples changing rulers in stone. The Angevin fortress became an Aragonese statement of power, most visibly in the triumphal arch celebrating Alfonso's entry into the city. Inside, the Sala dei Baroni and Palatine Chapel add very different spaces to the exterior's military presence.
What to look for
The marble triumphal arch framed by the castle towers
The star vault of the Sala dei Baroni
The Palatine Chapel within the fortress
Useful to know
Pause outside before entering to read the contrast between the towers and the later marble arch.
Combine it with Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace to compare two eras of royal Naples.
