Naples National Archaeological Museum
The main museum counterpart to Pompeii and Herculaneum, filled with objects removed from the buried towns and major classical sculpture. It deserves a focused visit.
The excavated streets show Roman spaces; this museum supplies many of the mosaics, frescoes and objects that once filled them. The Farnese sculptures offer another strand of ancient art on a very different scale. Visiting before or after the archaeological parks makes both experiences richer.
