Imperial Castle
Climb to the Imperial Castle for Nuremberg's medieval power centre and a view across the Old Town. The hilltop complex rewards a longer visit than a quick look from below.
Why go
The castle brings several periods of Nuremberg together on one sandstone ridge. Explore the Palas and Double Chapel, then seek out the Sinwell Tower and Deep Well; the city panorama makes the defensive setting clear. Much was restored after wartime damage, while the chapel and tower survived largely intact.
What to look for
The Palas stands beside the Romanesque Double Chapel.
The Sinwell Tower and Deep Well mark different parts of the castle complex.
Old Town rooftops spread out below the castle ridge.
Useful to know
Allow time for the uphill approach and separate castle sections.
Check the castle museum and garden access separately before setting out.
