St. Elisabeth
Visit St. Elisabeth for a grand domed rotunda that feels unlike Nuremberg's Gothic churches. Its columned interior is an especially useful comparison with neighbouring St. Jakob.
Why go
The church grew from a Catholic chapel in a city that became predominantly Protestant after the Reformation. The long effort to replace that chapel produced a Classical building with a dome, forty red marble columns and statues of the apostles. The contrast with St. Jakob nearby makes the religious and architectural changes of the city easy to see on one walk.
What to look for
A broad dome covers the church rotunda.
Forty red marble columns line the interior.
Statues of the twelve apostles stand inside the church.
Useful to know
Step inside for the dome and column arrangement; the exterior alone misses the main effect.
Pair it with St. Jakob for a close comparison of styles.
