St Aldate's Church
This active parish church stands by Pembroke Square opposite Christ Church. Its changing fabric gives a street-level glimpse of Oxford's long religious history, while sightseeing access needs checking.
The church gives Pembroke Square a different focus from its college neighbours. Worship on this site reaches back to the Saxon period, and the building has been enlarged and remodelled over many centuries. Notice the church frontage beside Pembroke's entrance, then compare it with Tom Tower across St Aldate's. Visit for worship only when that is your purpose.
What to look for
The church frontage faces St Aldate's beside Pembroke Square.
The building combines medieval origins with later remodelling.
