University Church of St Mary the Virgin
This High Street church was central to Oxford's early university life. Its ornate south porch and historic interior reward a close look, while the tower offers a separate view over Radcliffe Square.
St Mary's connects the university's beginnings with one of its clearest architectural viewpoints. University meetings, teaching and degree ceremonies once took place here. Notice the richly carved porch before entering the church; if you intend to climb the tower, check its separate access information rather than relying on church opening details.
What to look for
Nicholas Stone's ornate south porch faces the High Street.
The church interior recalls its early role in university teaching and government.
The tower looks across Radcliffe Square to the Radcliffe Camera and neighbouring colleges.
Useful to know
See the south porch from the High before approaching the church interior.
Check tower access separately if the Radcliffe Square panorama is the reason for your visit.
