Jardin du Luxembourg

Make the Luxembourg Garden a pause between Left Bank walks, with formal flowerbeds, tree-lined promenades and the Medici Fountain. The palace setting gives this outdoor stop more than greenery.

Jardin du Luxembourg

Why go

The garden offers several ways to slow a day around the Sorbonne and Boulevard Saint-Michel: follow the planted walks, look across the central basin or seek out the fountain’s grotto. Its layout brings a royal residence and an Italian-inspired garden into the middle of the 6th arrondissement.

What to look for

  • The Luxembourg Palace forms the architectural backdrop to the garden.
  • The central basin is associated with model sailboats.
  • Tree-lined promenades and flowerbeds give the garden contrasting spaces to explore.

The full story

Marie de’ Medici began creating the garden in 1612 for her new Left Bank residence. Her native Florence shaped the project: the palace drew on the Palazzo Pitti, while the surrounding grounds took inspiration from the Boboli Gardens. The Medici Fountain belongs to this introduction of Italian garden forms into Paris, including the sculpted grotto, a designed imitation of a cave. The fountain has not remained untouched. It was restored under Napoleon and moved and extensively rebuilt in the 1860s, so its appearance combines several periods rather than preserving one royal moment. The gardens also became a literary setting. Victor Hugo placed the meeting of Marius and Cosette here in Les Misérables; Henry James used them for Strether’s moment of self-understanding in The Ambassadors. Their role as a place for walking and reflection links those fictional scenes to the landscape.

Useful to know

  • Combine the garden with the Sorbonne and Boulevard Saint-Michel rather than another distant park.
  • Include the Medici Fountain in your garden walk; it is a distinct stop within the grounds.
  • Check the garden’s official timetable before planning it as your final outdoor stop.
