Why go

San Rocco is easy to miss beside the larger buildings of Piazza dei Cavalieri. Its history traces a shift from an earlier church to a congregation dedicated to St Roch, invoked against plague. If entry is available, look for the ceiling fresco of the saint healing plague sufferers, attributed by the official square project to Francesco Venturi.

What to look for

  • The modest façade sits beside Collegio Puteano on Knights' Square.
  • A ceiling fresco depicts St Roch healing people affected by plague.

The full story

San Rocco occupies a small place on the edge of Pisa's Knights' Square, but the site has a longer history than its present façade suggests. An earlier church is recorded in the eleventh century. In the late sixteenth century it was substantially remade after passing to a congregation devoted to St Roch, a saint associated with protection from plague. Its later façade belongs to the seventeenth century. The interior decoration makes that devotion plain: a ceiling fresco attributed to Francesco Venturi shows St Roch healing people affected by plague. Older painted fragments and other devotional works add further layers, though they depend on access to see. The church is useful in a walk around the square because it shifts attention from the grand Medici buildings to the smaller religious communities active beside them. Check the current tour calendar for entry.

Useful to know

  • Pair the church exterior with Collegio Puteano and the rest of Knights' Square.
  • Check the current guided-visit calendar and booking conditions before expecting entry.
