Why go
This day concentrates on the Vatican’s art, architecture and ceremonial spaces before following the Tiber toward papal Rome. Start at St Peter’s Square and Basilica, then give the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel their own substantial block. Cross by Ponte Sant’Angelo for Castel Sant’Angelo if time remains. Campo de’ Fiori and the Roman Ghetto stay in the preserved route as optional late-day additions, useful for a change of scale after the monumental interiors rather than mandatory stops.
