Why go
The Baths make Roman leisure architecture understandable at monumental scale. The central sequence moved through cold, warm and hot rooms, while palaestrae, pools and libraries extended the complex beyond hygiene. Surviving walls and mosaic fragments still convey the engineering required to heat and supply it.
What to look for
- Trace the central progression from the open swimming pool through the frigidarium toward the circular caldarium.
- Look for surviving floor mosaics and imagine the sculpture that once filled niches and halls.
- Use the towering wall cores to reconstruct vaults that rose above the bathing rooms.
Useful to know
- Allow 90 minutes for the archaeological circuit.
- The site is broad and exposed, with uneven surfaces and little shelter from summer heat.
- Verify the current official schedule before traveling because weekly visitor hours were not established.
