Circus Maximus

The long valley between the Palatine and Aventine preserves the footprint of Rome’s largest chariot-racing venue as an open archaeological park.

Circus Maximus

Why go

Few surviving walls can convey the scale of a structure once meant for enormous crowds, so the reward is spatial: walk the length of the track, imagine the central barrier and read the Palatine palace as a monumental backdrop. It also clarifies how racing, religious festivals and political display occupied the same arena.

What to look for

  • Follow the elongated track and central line to reconstruct the racing circuit rather than searching only for standing.
  • Look up to the palace remains on the Palatine, which dominated the imperial side of the valley.
  • At the southeast end, the archaeological area and Torre della Moletta preserve more of the venue’s built fabric.

Useful to know

  • A circuit of the open park takes roughly 30–45 minutes; the ticketed archaeological area is a separate visit.
  • The valley is exposed and distances feel longer in summer heat.
  • Combine it with the Bocca della Verità or an Aventine viewpoint rather than treating it as an extension of the Forum.
