Why go
The Palatine explains why the word “palace” became inseparable from imperial residence. Successive rulers expanded houses, gardens, reception halls and terraces across the hill, while the two valley views connect those private and ceremonial spaces to the Forum’s politics and the Circus’s mass entertainment.
What to look for
- Contrast the more intimate House of Augustus area with the vast platforms and halls of the later Flavian palace.
- Look south across the Circus Maximus to grasp the palace’s commanding relationship to the racecourse.
- From the Forum side, trace how the hill rises directly above Rome’s ancient civic center.
Useful to know
- Set aside about two hours in addition to Forum time; paths climb, loop and often reward detours.
- Carry water and sun protection because much of the archaeological landscape is open and exposed.
- Enter with a clear priority—palaces, viewpoints or early Rome—rather than trying to inspect every fragment.
