San Pietro in Vincoli

This restrained basilica on the Oppian Hill holds the chains traditionally associated with St Peter and Michelangelo’s commanding Moses for the tomb of Julius II.

San Pietro in Vincoli

Why go

The church joins relic devotion with one of Rome’s most concentrated Renaissance sculpture experiences. The chains beneath the high altar explain its foundation and name; Michelangelo’s unfinished tomb project dominates one transept, revealing how a vast papal commission was reduced to a wall monument.

What to look for

  • See the chains in the reliquary below the high altar and the ceiling fresco devoted to their legend.
  • Approach the Julius II monument from the nave to understand Moses as its forceful central figure.
  • Compare the ancient columns and simple basilica plan with the later coffered ceiling.

Useful to know

  • Allow 30–45 minutes, including focused time with Moses.
  • The hill approach involves stairs or a climb from the Cavour area.
  • Current church hours were not established; check access and respect worship.
