Why go
The sculpture rewards close, slow looking. Moses turns sharply while securing the tablets and gathering his beard, as though restraining action after finding the Israelites worshipping the Golden Calf. The famous horns derive from the Latin biblical description of rays emanating from his face.
What to look for
- Follow the tension from the planted right foot through the torso to the head turned left.
- Examine how the right hand binds tablets and beard into one compressed gesture.
- Look closely at the horns as a translation history made visible in marble.
Useful to know
- The sculpture is inside San Pietro in Vincoli and cannot be visited independently of the church.
- Set aside at least 15 minutes to view it from several angles within the available space.
- Confirm church access before climbing the Oppian Hill.
