Why go
The Forum makes Roman public life spatial rather than abstract. Walking the Via Sacra links the Senate house, law courts, religious precincts and victory monuments within the same compact valley. Its irregular plan also shows how the city’s institutions accumulated over centuries instead of following one master design.
What to look for
- Use the Via Sacra as a spine, then orient yourself by the Curia, Arch of Septimius Severus and Basilica of Maxentius.
- At the Temple of Vesta and House of the Vestals, notice how state religion and domestic space met beside the main.
- Look back from the Capitoline end to see the Forum framed by the Palatine’s palace ruins.
Useful to know
- Allow two to three hours when combined with Palatine Hill; the ruins are difficult to understand at a rushed pace.
- Expect uneven paving, little shade and substantial walking between fragmented structures.
- A viewpoint from the Capitoline side helps establish the layout before or after entering.
