Why go
The square is a lesson in urban orientation. Porta del Popolo marks the old Via Flaminia arrival, the obelisk fixes the center, and Via del Corso, Via del Babuino and Via di Ripetta fan south into Rome. Valadier’s curved terraces then connect the composition to the Pincio above.
What to look for
- Stand north of the obelisk to see the three streets of the Tridente open between the twin churches.
- Compare Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Santa Maria in Montesanto; their apparent symmetry conceals different plans.
- Look up toward the Pincian terrace to understand Valadier’s three-dimensional design.
Useful to know
- Allow 30–45 minutes for the square before adding church interiors or the Pincio climb.
- Continue south along Via del Corso or rise through the terraces to Villa Borghese.
- The central paving is open and exposed in hot weather.
