Why go
Its relatively compact interior rewards chapel-by-chapel attention. Pinturicchio preserves a rich Renaissance decorative world, Raphael designed the Chigi Chapel, and Caravaggio’s two Cerasi Chapel canvases turn conversion and martyrdom into radically immediate scenes. Bernini later reshaped parts of the church without erasing those layers.
What to look for
- In the Cerasi Chapel, compare Caravaggio’s Conversion of Saint Paul with the Crucifixion of Saint Peter opposite.
- Study the Chigi Chapel’s centralized design and its combination of Raphael and Bernini.
- Look into the Della Rovere Chapel for one of the church’s best-preserved fifteenth-century ensembles.
Useful to know
- Allow 45–60 minutes if the principal chapels are open.
- Pair it with Piazza del Popolo before climbing to the Pincian terrace.
- No current weekly visiting schedule was verified, so check church access first.
