Galleria Comunale d’Arte Moderna
Rome’s municipal modern-art gallery occupies a former Carmelite convent near Via Veneto and focuses on Italian painting, sculpture and graphics from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Why go
The gallery provides a compact route through modern Italian art outside the scale of the national collections. Works by Balla, Carrà, de Chirico, Guttuso, Manzù and Morandi show competing responses to modernity, while the convent setting creates a restrained contrast to their experiments.
What to look for
Look for shifts from late-nineteenth-century representation toward Futurism and Metaphysical painting.
Compare Balla and Carrà with de Chirico’s more enigmatic urban imagery.
Notice how sculpture and graphic works broaden the story beyond a sequence of paintings.
Useful to know
Allow 60–90 minutes for the compact collection.
Pair it with the Spanish Steps or Palazzo Barberini rather than crossing the city for one small museum.
Check current notices for holiday variations and gallery closures before visiting.
