Piazza Navona

An ancient stadium’s elongated footprint became Rome’s great Baroque square, framed by three fountains, Sant’Agnese in Agone and the former Pamphilj family palace.

Piazza Navona

Why go

The square works on two levels at once: its curved ends preserve the shape of Domitian’s first-century stadium, while Bernini and his contemporaries turned that inherited space into a stage for papal Rome. Walking from fountain to fountain makes both layers easy to read.

What to look for

  • Circle Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers to see four river gods arranged around an obelisk.
  • Compare the fountain’s restless sculpture with the concave façade of Sant’Agnese in Agone opposite.
  • Stand at either end to see how the long oval still follows the stadium’s arena.

Useful to know

  • Allow 30–45 minutes for the square, longer if entering Sant’Agnese or Palazzo Braschi.
  • Walk the full length rather than stopping only at the central fountain.
  • Campo de’ Fiori and the Pantheon are sensible continuations on foot.
