Why go
The fountain is not a freestanding monument but an architectural scene attached to Palazzo Poli. Nicola Salvi used the narrow piazza to heighten the reveal: Oceanus advances from the central arch while horses, tritons and carved rock dissolve the boundary between palace and water.
What to look for
- Read the central group from the calm horse to the rearing horse as two contrasting moods of the sea.
- Look above the main niche for reliefs connecting the fountain to the ancient Aqua Virgo.
- Find the large stone vase at the right edge, traditionally called the Ace of Cups.
Useful to know
- Approach through the surrounding lanes so the full façade appears at close range rather than from a broad avenue.
- Allow 20–30 minutes and expect managed circulation around the basin.
- Check the official access arrangements before visiting because maintenance and crowd controls can change the closest viewing area.
