Why go
The fortress shows how Salzburg's rulers combined defense, residence and display above the city. Walk the outer walls before entering the ornate state rooms and museums, then use the terraces to map the cathedral, river and surrounding mountains. A funicular saves energy, while the footpath makes the approach part of the historical sequence.
What to look for
- Massive walls and towers preserve the scale of a major medieval fortress.
- Terraces overlook the cathedral quarter, Salzach valley and Alpine horizon.
Useful to know
- Choose the funicular if you want to save energy for the interiors; allow at least two hours for the full complex.
