Hangang River

Spend time along the Hangang to see Seoul at its broadest scale, with open water, long views, and riverfront districts replacing the tight grain of the center.

Hangang River

Why go

The river is both a breathing space and a key to Seoul’s geography. Its width separates major districts, frames the skyline, and recalls the waterway that once connected the Joseon capital to a wider region. A riverside visit also makes the city’s bridges, islands, and distant building clusters easier to read as one system.

What to look for

  • Broad water views that open up Seoul’s dense urban landscape
  • The contrast between river parks, bridges, and business districts
  • A waterway formed by the meeting of the Namhan and Bukhan rivers

The full story

The Hangang is formed where the Namhan meets the Bukhan at Yangsu-ri east of Seoul. It then crosses the capital and continues toward the Yellow Sea. During the Joseon dynasty, it served as the primary waterway of Hanyang, carrying people and goods toward the new capital. Earlier kingdoms knew it by different names: Goguryeo called it Arisu, Baekje used Ugniha, and Silla called it Iha. The sequence reflects how control of the river changed with political power on the peninsula. Today the channel still shapes how Seoul is organized and perceived. Dense neighborhoods pull back at the banks, bridges create long cross-city views, and districts such as Yeouido present a modern face to the water. When walking beside it, look beyond the skyline. The river’s scale explains why it has repeatedly served as route, boundary, resource, and symbol in the city’s history.

Useful to know

  • Choose a specific riverside park or district rather than treating the whole river as one stop.
  • Use daylight for longer walks and clearer views across the water.
  • Pair a river walk with Yeouido to combine open space and modern Seoul.
