Masjid Jamae (Chulia)
A working mosque on South Bridge Road combines a distinctive twin-minaret entrance with the history of Singapore’s Tamil Muslim traders.
Why go
The mosque was established by Chulias from South India in the early nineteenth century. Its Indo-Islamic entrance and neoclassical prayer hall make the layered architecture worth examining, especially beside the other faith sites of Chinatown. A walk along South Bridge Road makes that unusual juxtaposition clear.
What to look for
Twin entrance minarets with onion domes.
Neoclassical prayer hall beyond the gateway.
South Bridge Road setting near Sri Mariamman Temple.
Useful to know
Check visitor arrangements before entering the working mosque.
Combine it with nearby South Bridge Road heritage sites on foot.
