Arezzo Cathedral
Arezzo’s hilltop cathedral brings Piero della Francesca’s Mary Magdalene together with colored glass by Guillaume de Marcillat in a layered Gothic church.
Why go
The interior rewards attention to both painting and light. Piero’s Magdalene is a precise reason to seek out the cathedral, while Marcillat’s windows change the atmosphere across the aisles; the later facade also contrasts with the medieval fabric visible around the building.
What to look for
Piero della Francesca’s Mary Magdalene fresco is inside.
Guillaume de Marcillat’s stained glass colors the interior.
The facade is later than much of the medieval building.
Useful to know
Look for the fresco first, then let the stained glass guide a slower circuit of the church.
Check visitor access around religious celebrations; worship hours and the tourist desk are different.
