Iglesia de San Juan de la Cruz

Stop for the contrast between a restrained brick exterior and an exuberant Rococo interior, but treat entry as uncertain unless current access has been confirmed.

Iglesia de San Juan de la Cruz

Why go

This early post-conquest parish was rebuilt in the seventeenth century and later transformed by Rococo decoration. Outside, ornament gathers around one portal against an otherwise plain wall; inside, stucco angels, drapery and foliage by Hipólito Rovira and Luis Domingo appear to climb across the surfaces.

What to look for

  • The largely plain brick façade concentrates its carving around the doorway.
  • Two female figures seem to slide along the brackets beside the portal columns.
  • Rococo stucco turns angels, fabric and foliage into a dense interior composition.

Useful to know

  • Plan on an exterior look unless official visitor access is confirmed.
  • Compare the sparse façade with photographs of the interior before deciding on a return visit.
