Santa Maria dei Carmini

Santa Maria dei Carmini pairs a historic Carmelite church with its neighboring confraternity building in Dorsoduro. Its façade and devotional imagery offer a different focus from the Scuola Grande's decorated rooms.

Santa Maria dei Carmini

Why go

The church explains the religious setting from which the neighboring Carmini confraternity developed. Carmelite identity appears in images of Elijah, Elisha and the scapular, while paintings by Cima da Conegliano, Lorenzo Lotto and Tintoretto broaden the art interest. Comparing church and scuola reveals related institutions with distinct spaces and purposes.

What to look for

  • Sculpted lunettes decorate the brick-and-marble façade.
  • Elijah and Elisha appear among the roofline figures.
  • Sebastiano Ricci’s ceiling painting glorifies the scapular.

The full story

The Carmini church belonged to Venice's Carmelite religious life. Its relationship with the neighboring charitable confraternity grew through lay devotion, including a women's association whose members stitched scapulars for the Carmelites. A scapular is a devotional garment, and its importance helps explain imagery that recurs in the church's decoration. The building contains several periods of work. Its early history reaches back to the fourteenth century, while the chancel and side chapels were rebuilt in the early sixteenth. Sebastiano Ricci's later ceiling painting makes the scapular the subject of a heavenly scene. The figures of Elijah and Elisha connect the exterior to the order's account of its spiritual origins. Other monuments link religious space to civic society. Jacopo Foscarini's large memorial recalls an admiral and procurator whose family palace stood across the canal. Guild patronage also shaped the art, including an altar associated with fish traders. The church brings Carmelite devotion, charitable work and the city's professional communities into a shared setting.

Useful to know

  • Look at the church and neighboring Scuola Grande as two separate buildings.
  • Check parish information before planning an interior comparison with the scuola.
