Washington Beyond the Mall

A menu of farther-flung landmarks combines the National Shrine, Ford’s Theatre, National Gallery, Kennedy Center, National Zoo and Old Town Alexandria; select one geographic branch.

Washington Beyond the Mall

Why go

Use this collection to break the Mall habit, not as a literal end-to-end route. Pair Ford’s Theatre with Chinatown and the National Gallery downtown; combine the National Zoo with nearby neighborhoods; or give the National Shrine and Old Town Alexandria separate excursions. It suits repeat visitors and anyone willing to choose one geographic theme instead of collecting distant landmarks. The Kennedy Center works naturally as an evening finale after a Potomac-side day.

Useful to know

  • Downtown branch: Ford’s Theatre, Chinatown and the National Gallery, with Capital One Arena only for a booked event.
  • Northwest branch: National Zoo, followed by the Kennedy Center only if you have energy and a performance plan.
  • Treat the National Shrine and Old Town Alexandria as separate outings because they lie in different directions.
