Homomonument

Three pink-granite triangles beside the Westerkerk commemorate LGBTQ+ people persecuted for their identity and connect remembrance to continuing equality struggles.

Homomonument

Why go

Karin Daan’s design makes Amsterdam itself part of the memorial. Its three points face the National Monument, the Anne Frank House and COC Nederland, linking wartime persecution, Jewish memory and organized LGBTQ+ rights across the city through one carefully plotted geometry.

What to look for

  • Three separate granite forms connect visually into one large triangle.
  • Steps descend from the waterside triangle to the Keizersgracht.
  • A line by Jacob Israël de Haan reads, ‘Such an endless desire for friendship.’

Useful to know

  • Walk between all three triangles; no single viewpoint explains the complete design.
  • Combine the memorial with Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House area to follow its symbolic alignments.
