Münsterplatz
Münsterplatz is the square in front of Bern’s Minster. It gives you room to study the cathedral façade and portal before deciding whether to go inside.
The square frames the Minster at street level, making its entrance and stonework easier to take in than from the surrounding lanes. It also shows how Bern made space for its new cathedral: the former churchyard was cleared in the fifteenth century and the square expanded as nearby houses were removed.
What to look for
The Minster’s façade and detailed portal face the square.
The open space contrasts with the tighter lanes of the Old City.
Useful to know
Pause here before entering the Minster so you can examine its portal from the square.
Treat the square and the cathedral interior as separate visits with separate access conditions.
