Museo di Palazzo Poggi
This museum in the university's historic Palazzo Poggi turns Bologna's scholarly past into rooms of natural history, anatomy, maps and scientific instruments. Visit for the collections, not general access to the university building.
The museum makes early scientific inquiry unusually tangible: Aldrovandi's natural history material sits alongside anatomy, ships and old geographical maps. The palace itself adds Renaissance painted rooms, and the visit extends to monumental library spaces. Give the different collections time rather than rushing through it as a single palace interior.
What to look for
Aldrovandi's natural history collections occupy historic rooms.
Anatomy, ships and old maps show the breadth of early scientific study.
Monumental rooms of the University Library form part of the museum visit.
