Porte Cailhau
This late-medieval riverside gate combines defensive features with Renaissance ornament. An interior climb adds Garonne views, but the narrow stairs make it a deliberate choice.
Porte Cailhau shows how Bordeaux once faced the river through its walls. From outside, compare the portcullis and machicolations with the carved windows and pointed roof. If you choose to climb, the upper viewpoint connects the gate to the quays, the Garonne and Pont de Pierre.
What to look for
Portcullis and machicolations recalling the gate's defensive role.
Renaissance-style carved windows set into the older-looking silhouette.
Views toward the Garonne, quays and Pont de Pierre from the upper level.
Useful to know
See the exterior first; the gate is rewarding even without the climb.
Check current admission and access before climbing, especially if narrow stairs are difficult.
