Charleston County Courthouse

Study James Hoban's late eighteenth-century courthouse from the street at the Four Corners of Law. It remains a working government building, so plan this as an exterior stop.

Charleston County Courthouse

Why go

The courthouse places an important architect's early work in Charleston's civic setting. Hoban later designed the White House, and this building stands where the colonial statehouse burned in 1788. Its classical front can be read alongside St. Michael's Church and the other institutions at Broad and Meeting Streets.

What to look for

  • The courthouse's classical facade at Broad and Meeting Streets
  • Its position within the Four Corners of Law
  • The Washington Square setting behind the civic crossroads

Useful to know

  • View the building from the public street; tourist entry is not established.
  • Combine it with St. Michael's Church and a walk around Washington Square.
