Chicago Riverwalk
A pedestrian route at water level through the architectural heart of downtown, offering close views of bridges, towers and the engineered Chicago River.
Why go
The Riverwalk changes the perspective of the Loop: bridges rise overhead, building bases become visible and the river feels like a civic room. It is one of the most efficient ways to understand Chicago's architecture and infrastructure together. Water-level movement continually reframes the same landmarks.
What to look for
Compare successive bridge designs and the way towers meet the water along each river bend.
Look back at the paired Wrigley Building and Tribune Tower near DuSable Bridge.
Useful to know
Walk one bank in a single direction and use a bridge to return at street level.
Sections can be exposed or seasonally affected; check access and river conditions before a long visit.
