Great Synagogue of Florence
Florence’s green-domed synagogue combines Moorish Revival ornament with the history of Jewish emancipation, joining monumental architecture to a visit focused on Jewish heritage.
Why go
Built between 1874 and 1882 after David Levi left his estate for a new temple, the synagogue announces a new era of civic freedom. Its striped masonry, horseshoe arches and patterned interior still stand apart from Florence’s dominant church architecture.
What to look for
Read the faded stripes created by alternating travertine and granite in the exterior masonry.
Look up to the copper-green central dome and the smaller onion-domed corner towers.
Inside, compare the horseshoe arches with Giovanni Panti’s mosaics and frescoes.
Useful to know
Plan the synagogue and Jewish Museum as one combined visit.
