Loggia del Pesce

A rebuilt Medici fish-market loggia now frames one side of Piazza de’ Ciompi, making a compact exterior stop for architecture and urban history.

Loggia del Pesce

Why go

The nine-arched structure explains how Florence repeatedly adapted its public spaces. Cosimo I commissioned Giorgio Vasari to house the fish market near Ponte Vecchio; the loggia was later dismantled and reconstructed in Piazza de’ Ciompi using much of its original fabric.

What to look for

  • Count the nine broad arches carried by piers and columns.
  • Look for medallions showing fishing and the sea along both sides.
  • Find the four coats of arms marking the corners.

Useful to know

  • View the loggia from across Piazza de’ Ciompi to take in the full nine-bay rhythm.
  • Treat it as an open-air architectural stop rather than planning around an interior visit.
