Museo di San Marco
A former Dominican friary holds Florence’s deepest encounter with Fra Angelico, placing his luminous frescoes and panels within the cells and cloisters made for them.
Why go
San Marco lets art, architecture and religious life explain one another. Michelozzo’s restrained friary frames Fra Angelico’s frescoed cells, major panel paintings and the great Crucifixion, while Savonarola’s rooms connect the complex to Florence’s turbulent late 15th century under one roof.
What to look for
See Fra Angelico’s Annunciation in the architecture of the Dominican friary.
Walk the monastic cells, each marked by a small devotional fresco by Fra Angelico or his workshop.
Visit Savonarola’s rooms and compare their political history with the friary’s contemplative spaces.
Useful to know
Treat the museum and the adjacent San Marco church as separate visits with separate access arrangements.
Check the official calendar before going.
