Palazzo Medici Riccardi
This early Medici palace hides its richest reward behind a disciplined stone façade: Benozzo Gozzoli’s jewel-like procession in the Magi Chapel.
Why go
The palace shows how Cosimo de’ Medici turned a family residence into a public statement without building a fortress. Michelozzo’s masonry grows lighter floor by floor, while the intimate chapel replaces restraint with color, portraits and a ceremonial journey through Tuscany.
What to look for
Follow the façade from rough ground-floor rustication to finer stonework above.
Look for Michelangelo’s ground-floor kneeling windows inserted into former openings.
In the Magi Chapel, study Gozzoli’s 1459 procession for faces, costume and Tuscan detail.
Useful to know
Make the Magi Chapel your priority; it is the palace’s most intact 15th-century interior.
Walk the exterior before entry so the graded masonry and later window alterations are easier to recognize.
