Palazzo Strozzi
A monumental Renaissance palace now used for changing art exhibitions, with a rigorously symmetrical facade and an arcaded central courtyard.
Why go
Palazzo Strozzi pairs major contemporary exhibitions with one of Florence's clearest statements of merchant power. Filippo Strozzi began the palace in 1489 after returning from exile. Its freestanding block, strict symmetry and immense rusticated walls turn a family residence into an urban monument.
What to look for
Massive rusticated stone gives way to a sharply projecting cornice at the roofline.
Wrought-iron corner lanterns add fine detail to the severe exterior.
An arcaded central courtyard creates a calmer space inside the palace block.
Useful to know
Check the current exhibition and its dated opening period before planning an interior visit.
Even without an exhibition visit, enter the courtyard and walk around the freestanding exterior.
Compare its four-sided symmetry with Palazzo Rucellai's street facade nearby.
