Why go
The bridge combines graceful engineering with a dense history of loss and reconstruction. Bartolomeo Ammannati built the Renaissance design after the flood of 1557. Retreating German forces destroyed it in 1944, and Florence reconstructed it with recovered stones and material from the original quarry.
What to look for
- Three flattened arches give the bridge its unusually low, flowing profile.
- Four early 17th-century statues personify Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.
- The center of the bridge opens a strong downstream view toward Ponte Vecchio.
Useful to know
- Cross slowly and pause near the center for the clearest Ponte Vecchio view.
- Inspect the four corner statues from both banks; each represents a season.
- Continue into Piazza Santa Trinita to connect the bridge with Via de' Tornabuoni.
