Why go
The loggia offers more than its souvenir stalls. Built for silk and luxury goods, it preserves clues to Florence's commercial rules and public rituals. The bronze boar fountain draws attention, but the marked stone beneath the arcade carries the sharper story of insolvent debtors punished in public.
What to look for
- The Porcellino is a bronze wild boar, despite the fountain's familiar 'piglet' name.
- The pietra dello scandalo is a round, two-colored marble marker in the loggia floor.
- Niches around the arcade hold statues of Michele di Lando, Giovanni Villani and Bernardo Cennini.
Useful to know
- Visit when fewer stalls obscure the floor if you want to find the pietra dello scandalo.
- Look beyond the fountain to the loggia's columns, corner niches and market layout.
- Combine it with Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Repubblica on a short central walk.
